Lulu along with grandma and Papa had come up the night before. They had camp all set up including our tent. All we had to do was "move in". We gave each of the boys their own cot to sleep on. This would be the first time camping for either of them. They were excited.
With a fire made and hungry bellies we made dinner over the fire. The menu was Hamburgers and Hot dogs with macaroni salad. then all sorts of snacks to fill in the gaps.
Later Friday night B and his gang arrived. they did their "moving in".
We took the boys for a short car ride into town to show them the beach. Lulu decided to stay at camp.
When we got back Lulu was talking about "gweeny wood" what this was we have no idea but it was sure to be something. Sure enough, later when it was dusk and we were getting ready to
With the youngest tot asleep, and his brother whining that he is hungry it was proving to be a long night. Finally, he admitted that he was scared as well as hungry. So a snack was found and a hand was held and a little boy went to sleep in a cot by himself.
In the morning the air was crisp, the breakfast was good and the coffee hot. We loaded up and went to go find a letterbox. It was at the AuSable Canoers Memorial. I had never heard of this spot so I was anxious to go. When we got there the boys were hungry and tired. We were unsure just how long this box would take to find, as there was a hike down a trail involved. So we decided to skip the box and go to Lumbermans Monument. It was just as it always is. Still a visit is always a must. It was past naptime now and we were all hungry, but it was time to meet the others at the beach. The kids swam and after a couple hours we headed back to camp for dinner.
We made foil packets of meatballs, potatoes and carrots to cook in the fire. There was also corn on the cob. Yum! a bit after that we headed out to Harrisville to go get Ice Cream. After that we headed out to the Sturgeon Point Lighthouse to check the hours for tomorrow. while there we seen a porcupine. None of us had ever seen one of these before. It was bigger than expected. then back to camp for more "Gweeny wood" fire and s'mores. This time at bed time both boys went to bed without incident.
On Sunday morning it was tear down time. After another good breakfast, we had the tent emptied in no time. Loaded up and not ready to go home we went to the lighthouse. There was a letterbox there to be found. Well we looked but found nothing. So off to Glennie for another one. This one was throwing me for a loop but with a tip from John, we had it found in just a few minutes. We were even "First Finders". The first ones to ever find the box. Then we decided to do the one we skipped yesterday. So, back to the Canoers Memorial. Before getting there we decided to stop at Iargo Springs. It is a stop that has an overlook but to fully see what your there for you need to go down some 300 steps. That in its self is not bad, its the coming up that is the bugger. Well John and Sam decided to go down. Once, down Sam says he has to go potty.
So, up the steps they have to go. A bit faster than need be because of the potty situation, they were all tired out. We loaded into the car and drove 2 miles to the Canoers Memorial. We found the trail easily and unsure how long it was going to be headed into the woods. About half way through Sam says his legs are getting tired. The letterbox was found and stamped and re-hid and back out we went. The boys did a great job of hanging in there. They practically ran back to the car. A last spurt of energy. Since we were so close we decided to go to Desi's Mexican restaurant for lunch which was really almost an early dinner time.
after that we decided to let our Tom Tom take us home. It led us a back road way to Tawas and from there we headed south on US-23. The traffic was smooth sailing and in Clio we stopped for one more letterbox. This one we had found before so it took just minutes to find.
One the road again, a brief stop for aother Tim Hortons and we were home.
I went to pick up Lulu, whom had rode home with Papa and Grandma. Baths and showers for all, beds made and bellies full off to bed we went.
Without such great parents to make this trip possible, it would not have been even half as successful. So a big huge THANK-YOU goes out to them.
3 days, 3 boxes and "gweeny wood"....... sounds good to me!!!!
